If audience members come to feel that they have heard this repertoire before – familiar music sung by the same ensemble – they are sure to experience déjà vu . And, in fact, that is just what the Island Consort Chamber Choir will present in their spring 2019 program entitled, “Déjà Vu : A Retrospective”. Director Bruce Farquharson has assembled a collection of notable works, taken from each year of the choir’s 12-year history, that represent the many choral elements of the group’s performances. The choir has sung more than 270 works in 14 different languages taken from 5 centuries of choral music, some accompanied and many a cappella. All are worthy of being sung again and the choice of which to include in a single program and which to leave for another time is difficult – we have many favourites!
The program begins with Thomas Tallis’ “If Ye Love Me” which was sung at Prince Harry’s wedding and moves through 4 other Early Music pieces, including a Bach motet. From the Romantic Era we include works by Brahms, Schubert, Faurè and Elgar. From 20th Century and Contemporary composers we include 2 songs of the rose, 2 Russian pieces, a zany Galgenlied, the French Canadian “Ah, Si Mon Moine” and the beautiful “Shenandoah”. Jenny Vincent is the piano/organ accompanist and will feature on 7 works. So, treat yourselves to a taste of the many facets of this gem of a choir, The Island Consort.
