The Port Theatre
This annual concert features over 50 local musicians ranging in age from 4 years to 60+, and it has become a favourite event in Nanaimo’s music community. This year we are excited to have the Island Consort Chamber Choir joining us as our special guest ensemble.
Fiddelium is a group of 13 local youth string players who have made a name for themselves both locally and at the national level. They have twice won the CBC Music Class Challenge, a national competition that involves thousands of music students from across the country. Their debut CD recording was also nominated for a 2023 Canadian Folk Music Award in the category of “Young Performer of the Year”. Don’t let their age fool you: Fiddelium is a truly professional ensemble that Nanaimo should be very proud of.
Fiddelium is joined on stage by FOLK BAND, an all-ages community folk music ensemble directed by Trish and Geoff Horrocks. The multi-generational aspect of this group is really magical: where else do kids and parents and co-workers and neighbours get to make music together?
This year’s guest ensemble, the Island Consort, is a 20-voice classical chamber choir directed by Bruce Farquharson. Their repertoire is performed mostly a cappella, with occasional keyboard or strings accompaniment. We are looking forward to blending strings and voices together with the ICC.
This concert will also feature the youngest members of the Nanaimo Suzuki violin, viola, and cello community in a joyful medley of tunes that will melt your heart.
Bring the entire family for this memorable evening of community and connection. If Fiddelium is not already a fixture on your events calendar, it should be!
